The playful graphics (“Police Line: Do Not Cross” tape across the tray liner card) on the Mankiller (Hot Fudge Music) packaging perhaps unwittingly hint at the almost criminal self-assurance of auteur BillyLee Janey, a sharp guitarist and smooth vocalist whose music, muscular and professional, isn’t exactly blues but isn’t rocked-out, either. Instead, it hits the exact same hybrid bulls eye Tinsley Ellis has successfully targeted.
Janey’s combination of power and grace compares favorably with the Georgian, and his slinky funk, a little jazz, some minor-key stuff and cool blues all run on high octane. - Tom Hyslop
