Way out in Iowa there's some home cooking going on between guitarist Bryce Janey and harmonica/guitarist Merrill Miller. "Live at Checkers Tavern" (Blue Sunday Entertainment) catches the duo in a country mood at a club in Cedar Rapids, giving a driving, heartfelt spin to several golden oldies like "Terraplane Blues," "Built for Comfort" and the signature number of some obscure left-handed ax-man, "Purple Haze."
Janey is of the prolific Iowa blue Janey family: His father Billy also records, and it started with mom and dad's band, the Janeys. Bryce has a rich, assured voice, and things are at their best when he's singing and Miller's blowing. Bryce takes a nice turn at T-Bone-style guitar with Miller's acoustic backing on a cover of James Harman's "That's Not Your Baby." Nice, intimate, gutsy stuff. - 5 Stars
